Polonnaruwa
Located in the North Central Province of the island, Polonnaruwa is the second most ancient city of Sri Lankan Kingdoms. Polonnaruwa became the capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of the first kingdom Anuradhapura and the rise of the chola dynasty in 993.
Due to its historic value the ancient part of the city is declared as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. The massive structures of palaces, swimming pools, religious ruins such as Sacred Quadrangle, vatadage, dagabs and Buddha statues carved from rock (Lankathilaka and Gal Viharaya). The Chola rule brought Hindu traditions to Polonnaruwa of which the signs can be seen to this day such as the Shiva Dewale.
