Located right beneath the Indian subcontinent, the tear-drop shaped island is lying in the latitude and longitude of 6°54′N 79°54′E. The maximum distance from the southernmost point to the northernmost point of the country is 432KM from Point Dondra to Point Pedro and the maximum distance from the westernmost point from Colombo to the easternmost point at Sangaman Kanda is 224KM.

Sri Lanka is a tropical island blessed with the sun, sand and beach. The island is 65,610 Sq.KM and its coastline is 1,340KM which encompasses several pristine beaches popular among surfers and beachgoers the world over. The highest point is Mount Pidurutalagala which is 8,281 feet.

Sri Lanka has held strategic importance in international trade since the olden days. Ancient Ceylon was a famous trading port attracting merchants from the Middle East, European and Southeast Asian countries.
