Jaffna
Located in the Northern part of Sri Lanka, Jaffna is an ancient harbour city. Jaffna is the home of Hindu traditions in Sri Lanka and Sri Lankan Tamil culture. Though one country, the southern and northern parts of the island have very distinctive food culture.
Walk into the local market and you will be greeted by friendly local vendors selling fresh harvest and delicious fruits. The grapes grown in Jaffna, has a unique sour and sweet taste. If you are visiting during the season, you can buy bags full of yummy Jaffna grapes. The natural pool, keerimalai is considered as a holy water spring by the Hindus and is believed to have healing powers. The locals splashing into the water is a common sight during day-time.
Two-thousand years ago, Sanghamitta thero – the daughter of the famous Indian king Ashoka arrived to the Dambakola Patuna. Today there is a temple revered by Buddhists. Built in the 17th century by Portuguese and later conquered and modernized by Dutch, and occupied by the British during their reign, the Jaffna Fort reveals a significant piece of history and the archaeology.
The Casurina Beach, Chudikulam Bird Sanctuary, Jaffna library, Nagadeepa, Nallur Kandasawamy Kovil and Point Pedro are also among must visit sites in Jaffna.
