Diwali, Deepavali or Dipavali is a Hindu festival of light, which is celebrated in the Northern Hemisphere each fall. Diwali is one of the most popular festivals of Hinduism. It symbolizes the spiritual: "light is better than darkness, it is good to defeat evil and knowledge is better than ignorance". Light is a metaphor of knowledge and consciousness. Temples, houses, shops and office buildings light up during the celebration.

The Diwali festival is likely to blend the harvest festival of ancient India. Texts such as Padma Purana, Skanda Purana are mentioned in Sanskrit, and these texts were completed in the second half of the 1st century. The diyas mentioned in Skanda Kishore Purana symbolize a part of the sun, describing it as the cosmic giver of light and energy in all life, and the seasonal transition of Kartik in the Hindu calendar month.

Sri Lanka is located in the southeast of India. In relation to the Ramayana epic, Diwali is especially important for the people here. This festival is characterized by lighting, the manufacture of enamel toys, the making of characters with crystal sugar, commonly known as Misiri.
